Soul Stew is Toronto’s legendary R&B, Soul, Jazz & Funk ensemble. Made up of some of the finest musicians in Canada, they play annually at the Rochester Jazz Festival to 8,000 people. Leader Roberto Occhipinti is an astonishing creative force, with multiple JUNO wins as bassist (with Hilario Duran, Jane Bunnett), and as producer in both classical and jazz categories.
Soul Stew draws inspiration from the classic sounds of the legendary recording bands (a la The Funk Brothers from the movie Standing in the Shadows of Motown) of Stax, Philly, The Meters, and Muscle Shoals. Its members have collectively and individually performed and recorded with The Boss Brass, Gorillaz, Bruce Cockburn, Chaka Khan, Paul Butterfield, Herbie Hancock, Bonnie Raitt, The Parachute Club, Holly Cole, Marc Jordan, Gino Vanelli, Tito Puente, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Aretha Franklin, Nelly Furtado AND SO MANY OTHERS! Whew.
That list keeps growing, but what Soul Stew is really about is simply guys -Roberto, Michael Dunston, David Gray, Matt Horner, John Johnson, and Mark Kelso - playing the music they grew up with, music they will love forever. It’s perfect music for dancing or listening, and always will be.
